Retired teachers from Restigouche Branch spent a sun-filled afternoon at the picturesque “Ristigouche Salmon Club” in Matapedia, Quebec. Their visit was made even more memorable by Mark Ramsay, the club’s manager, who captivated the group with a fascinating account of the club’s rich history.
He described a time when salmon were so plentiful that fishers had to watch their step to avoid walking on them. In stark contrast, the group reflected on today’s declining salmon populations. In response, the club has embraced a catch-and-release program for several years, hoping to help restore the salmon to the river. Though fishers often leave empty-handed, their love for the serene beauty of the Ristigouche remains strong.
The afternoon concluded with tea, coffee, and a delightful assortment of sweets enjoyed on the club’s charming front porch. Surrounded by quiet, rustic beauty, the teachers found themselves imagining days gone by.
As a token of appreciation, Mark Ramsay was presented with a framed photograph of the river, captured by renowned local photographer Mike Levesque.
