From The President – Sept 2023

Best Job Ever

As a new school year gets under way all of us who are retired are justified in enjoying the feeling of freedom we experience watching the school buses pass us by. Teachers, many of them our former colleagues, and students are returning to school for another year filled with promise and high expectations and we wish them well, but we also have a difficult time concealing our joy at not having to attend school every day, or to live our lives in sync with the bell system, or to do early bus duty.

We love our sense of freedom after so many years of having our lives all planned out and regimented. Even for the people who are going to do some supply teaching, they will go in when they are available and when and if they want to. This retirement is the best job many of us have ever had.

Speaking of the first day of school, I am going to be in Perth Andover for their “Freedom from the Bell” breakfast. I look forward to it and I hope you will take part in similar events being planned in your area. It is so great that we can gather together again with friends and fellow retirees. The first day of school gives us a good excuse to gather but we will have many opportunities through the year. I have seen some of the plans being put together by local branch executives and they are very impressive. I encourage you to do yourself a favour by participating in local gatherings and fun events and maybe even get involved in the planning.

Please also keep an eye out for some special events we are planning provincially. We will be doing another one or two webinars on topics of interest to you and we are co-operating in advertising the Vestcor Annual Information Meeting to be presented on October 11th at 7:00 PM. There were some glitches in registering and accessing the meeting last year, but we believe they have been fixed or worked around and that you will find it very easy to access this year. Please visit our/your website www.nbsrt.org for updates on all of our activities.

Have a wonderful year, enjoy friends and family, and stay as active as you are able.

Bob
