Retired Teachers and Their Group Insurance Connection

The NBTF Group Insurance Plan for NBSRT Members

As members of the NBSRT, retired teachers are part of the NBTF Group Insurance Plan, a group benefits program established for New Brunswick's active and retired teachers, and administered through the NBTF Group Insurance Trust Fund. It provides a range of health, dental, travel, life and other insurance benefits to eligible members, including coverage that continues into retirement. That means that retired teachers can continue the group relationship after retirement rather than having to leave the teachers' plan and purchase a separate individual policy.

Where the NBTF Plan Has Important Strengths:

Continuity Into Retirement

Teachers can continue their relationship with the teacher group insurance arrangement after retirement rather than having to obtain an entirely separate individual policy.

Collective Purchasing

Active and retired teachers participate in a large collective rather than purchasing insurance individually.

Trustee Governance

Teacher representatives have a role in overseeing the Trust Fund and its financial operations.

Broad Coverage

The plan combines medical, hospital, vision, dental, travel, life and other insurance benefits.

Long History

The health portion of the plan dates back to 1971, giving the program more than five decades of experience in providing teacher group benefits.

Prescription drugs are one of the most important areas for comparing retiree plans.

The value of drug coverage can vary considerably from one retiree to another depending on individual circumstances.

Putting the NBTF Plan in Perspective:

The NBTF Group Insurance Plan is a mature, collectively governed teacher group-benefit program with an important feature for New Brunswick retirees: continued access to a teacher-based insurance pool after retirement.
