The NBSRT Wellness Committee

Purpose and Objectives of the Wellness Committee

Founded in 2017 at the request of the NBSRT Executive, the Wellness Committee was established to:

  • Review wellness-related materials;
  • Educate Wellness Facilitators on various aspects of wellness;
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Facilitators, enabling them to organize wellness activities within their branches; and
  • Make recommendations to the Executive.

Objectives
The Committee’s primary objective is to equip Wellness Facilitators with knowledge and resources on all aspects of wellness while supporting their efforts to implement branch-specific wellness initiatives.

Guided by the nine pillars of wellness—physical, emotional, nutritional, mental, social, environmental, spiritual, financial, and volunteerism (which replaced occupational wellness)—the Committee uses these principles to shape its presentations and shared materials.

Structure and Representation
Each of the NBSRT’s ten branches is represented by one Wellness Facilitator, reflecting the organizational structure of the NBTA. While some branches, such as Victoria-Tobique, have smaller populations compared to larger branches like MARTA in Moncton, their geographic areas can be significantly larger, adding diversity to the representation.

Meetings and Communication
The Committee holds two to three formal meetings annually. Since the onset of COVID-19, most meetings have been conducted via Zoom, with one in-person meeting held each year, typically the day before the AGM.

Communication with Facilitators primarily occurs through group and individual emails, supplemented by texts or phone calls as needed.

Budget and Funding
The Committee’s annual budget of $2,000 covers:

  • Travel, accommodations, and meals for ten branch representatives and two co-chairs;
  • Honorariums and expenses for guest speakers.

Additionally, each branch may apply for a $200 Wellness Grant annually to support local initiatives.

Guest Speakers and Contributions
The Wellness Committee has hosted a variety of knowledgeable speakers, including:

  • Margaret Langille, Nutritionist;
  • Kathy Szo, Reiki Master;
  • Kate Baird, City of Fredericton recreation specialist focused on seniors;
  • Dr. Bill Cook, Director of the Iris Center specializing in Mind-Body Medicine;
  • Marshall Button, Humorist, Actor, and Director of Moncton’s Capitol Theatre;
  • Dr. Bill Randall, retired Professor of Gerontology, St. Thomas University.

These speakers have addressed diverse wellness topics, enriching the knowledge base of Wellness Facilitators.

Additional Initiatives
The Wellness Committee has also contributed to the NBSRT through:

  • Publishing wellness articles in Reflections;
  • Organizing wellness activities at provincial meetings;
  • Conducting surveys on the volunteer efforts of retired teachers;
  • Promoting monthly wellness calendars.

This comprehensive approach continues to strengthen the health and well-being of NBSRT members across the province.
